The problem with RTS games is that the a biggest element is online play, and if you've never play an RTS before.... you'd probably get raped when you jump online and try to make a name for yourself. There's no bigger learning curve than the ones in online RTS games. I never got into a console RTS.... so i dunno about the challanges there.
As for SRPGs, they are not as daunting as RTS games. Most the SRPG I've played are more about grinding and building up your characters than actual strategizing.
