That is a funny statement.  Makes me almost want to laugh.  VR won't be mainstream till another 20 years when the tech gets better and the price drops considerably.  Even then I doubt it will ever become mainstream.

Wow, 20 years? I have seen estimates by many companies that see VR surpassing the smartphone industry within 5 years. Between PSVR, Vive, Oculus, Gear VR, Google VR, the market is going to be massive. Then there are other even higher end medical and military VR systems, and Apple has been hiring a lot of high profile VR experts the last six months, so there will no doubt be an Apple VR device in the next couple of years.

The fact that VR is everything si what is going to make it the biggest selling gadgets in history. It is the best educational tool ever made, it is the best marketing tool ever made, it is ideal making doumenteries, virtual tours, live events, home video, and so much more. Just think about how we will have an Action cam in the next couple of years that can capture 360 deg video of your snowboarding, biking, hiking, etc. People are going to go crazy for VR.

As a VR fan I am not sure if it ever really will be mainstream and people who say it will be in 5-20 years are just guessing.  I hope it will be mainstream but the worst case scenario will be like racing games where almost everyone agrees the best experience is with a wheel but not that many people have one because the wheels not work for all games and are not supported and with so many people vr devices coming you will get issues as 'I can not play that game x with this vr device' to get it mainstream it has to become cheap and gets all the support something that I see can take still a long time'..
