Your right maybe BO3 was a bad example. How about GTA5?, Or CoD Ghost?. But the point still stands. Its not that people want the greatest its that they want the best from their brand. Consoles are different then TV's and other gadgets that get yearly upgrades and people know that when they buy a Sony branded console it will last. I dont think Sony should bring their consoles into the same upgradable space as other devices since i believe this will be bad in the long run. Think of it like this. When sony does go to launch the PS5 most people who would of got it on Day 1 are now going to be like "Fuck it ill just wait for the PS5Pro". PS4Pro could face the same problem on release. With talk of PS5 coming 2-3 years after people might just say "Fuck it ill wait and get a PS5 on release" or they might say "Fuck it ill skip the PS4 this time and get the XB1S next year since it will last me longer before i need to upgrade again" They could even just go to the NX since nintendo seem to be the only company to still have real gens. Like i said to me it doesnt really matter but im just saying it "might" be a problem for others and even a problem for Sony if it weakens their brand instead of making it stronger. |
GTA 5 is actually also a terrible example, when the game was released on PS4 and PC, it had a 1st person mode that was not available on the previous generation consoles at all. So that would be something that is not happening between the OG and the Pro.
The fact of the matter is, there are reasons why both MS and Sony are bringing mid gen upgrades. There was a significant reduction in the size of the GPUs, from 28 to 14nm, which means it makes it more expensive to offer the old hardware than upgrade and get a better hardware inside.
That is a win for consumers. If we want, we can get a better version of the games we already were going to get. It makes sense for Sony as well in this case, sincethey can reduce the costs of the machine while offering a good upgrade to the users.
The argument of "but my friend will brag he has x better than me" is childish, nonsense and as TheBlackNaruto pointed out, could literally be applied to any other product in the world.
After your reply I understand you do in fact game on PC, so you're trying to play devil's advocate on behalf of someone who might feel slighted with all this. I don't think that's necessary at all, there's plenty of people online who will voice their complains if they indeed feel bad about anything. Having people make up reasons why X or Y upgrade is bad just muddies the water. Nothing is gained from it.
Finally to your point of people may be hesitant to buy the PS5 when it comes out, I would point out the time that passed between the Xbox and the 360. Microsoft's most popular console came 3 years after their previous console was released (2002 to 2005). If anything it proves that gamers want the shiny new experiences and we will support them once they show us the goods.
