No hardcore gamer I know would ever only take review scores into consideration when buying games. In fact, all the hardcore gamers I know love the games they play, and are much more harsh with any flaws they find in games than someone more casual would be. I don't see your point about core gamers playing games that aren't fun simply because they score well on gamerankings.
