I think we're in agreement, perceived value is the value a product is afforded through marketing, "it" factor and overall popularity. Then there's actual value and market value. The actual value of an iPhone is far below both the market value and perceived value. Like you said; the hardware is nothing special, the same goes for Mac, they sport underclocked Intel processors and ditto graphics cards, medicore RAM, decent disc drives and great displays. Name and brand are amon the chief factors in perceived value, Apple have somehow managed to make a lot of people think that their goods are the shit. God job Apple, poor job consumers who enable the most ludicrous profit margins in the industry. |
Its a mix of Hardware and Software. Because Apple have to deal with fewer (way fewer) hardware setups, they can better optimize software. And because they own their OS their hardware integration is still best in class, and Android + Windows haven't been able to quite replicate their ecosystem. Maybe they could, if manufacturers and OS owners played nicer with each other.
Many console gamers say ease of use and the fact that you don't have to spend hours solving problems make consoles better than PC. Well, if you buy Apple, you can be sure that your shiny new phone will be perfectly compatible with your Mac/Ipad/Whatever. No worries.
I use Android don't get me wrong, but I'm not going to blind myself to the merits Apple products have.
