Public endorsement of any religious views is the perfect breeding ground for cults and extremists.

So you suggest we ban all religion? I'm sure that would help. Just like how the prohibition and the war on drugs helped reduce crime in America. Or just that we create asocial stigma that marginalizes religious people, creating the perfect breeding ground for extremism because marginalized social outcasts are those that become indoctrinated with extremist views?

You don't need to to ban religion. If you stop incouraging idiots, they won't have their egos pushed to a point where they get dangerous. Religion can easily be discouraged by not endorsing it to high heavens anymore. Social non-acceptence and peer pressure will do the rest.

Believing in something is has no merit on its own and as such should not be treated as something sacred and protctable.

Extremists aren't extreme because there are too many people against them, but because there are too many people endorsing their views.
