Why stop at only 144hz? There are 160hz, 165hz, 185hz 200hz and 240hz panels available now.
Some monitors will happily let you overclock them too.
Going 120hz is amazing, then you get used to the smoothness and think nothing of it... Then you use a 60hz panel and you feel like you are dealing with a Nintendo 64 game. It's surreal.

Emulation is perfectly legal for the majority of the planet.
The legality issues arise with how people acquire the games to be emulated.
Can't say I share your controller issue though.
