It's not about hiding the fact..the HDMi controller inside the PS4 was able to be updated to HDR , because it was 2.0a compliant.

The BD-UHD optical dive is a BDxL optical Drive Sony has indeed a BDxL optical drive inside the PS4..it can read layers past two layers..Sony did not want to pay the licence's for UHD playback, it most likely saved a few $ , without that functionality.. And it's very likely Sony feels no reason to update the Drive for UHD playback, because the HDMi port controller chip has a Upscaler inside..

It's a 6x CAV drive, it's simply not fast enough for 4K UHD discs. Unless they can patch it to spin faster....

Its actually fast enough..the optical drives is BDxL can read multiple layers over 2. The playback for BD is not for BD-UHD playback, Sony even has sever patents in the BD-XL format which is actually BD-UHD optical drives.

And as I shown above the HDMi controller chip on the Mobo has an actual 4K video and pictures Upscaler in the HDMi  controller chip..that Panasonic on board HDMi controller was pretty impressive what it had built in from the get go.
