But surely PCs have an advantage in that they can upgrade on a regular basis, whereas consoles are limited in that respect

You CAN upgrade your PS3 -- your Hard Drive can be upgraded all the time. It's just less upgradeable than a typical PC. The same is true of the Wii: it can be upgraded slightly (you can get a new monitor/TV), but it's not as upgradeable as the PS3 or 360.

Here is the list of things you can upgrade on a typical PC:

1) GPU
2) CPU
3) Motherboard
4) HDD
5) PSU
6) RAM
7) Monitor (or TV)
8) I/O devices

A few things you cannot upgrade:

1) Capacitors
2) Diodes
3) PCI ports

Among others. Here is the list of things you can upgrade on a PS3 or 360:

Among others. It's the exact same thing, just further down the line. The typical PC is more customizable than the typical PS3/360 which are more customizable than the Wii. The PS3/360 are clearly intending to be more like the PC -- and that's fine. But if you want to be more like the PC, then you're also going to have to stomach comparisons to the PC. It's not fair to make systems that move closer and closer to PC design (so much closer that we begin to refer to the PC/PS3/360 "platform" in singular) but then insist that it's not fair to be compared to the PC.

In short, most people who own PS3s and 360s seem to LIKE the fact that these systems are much more comparable to PCs these days. And they are more comparable. But if you're going to compare the platforms when it's favorable to you, you also have to compare them when it isn't favorable to you. I'm just so, so sick and tired of the PC being included in these discussions only when it favors the PS3 and 360 to have it included.
