In 2003, the PS2 more than doubled the Xbox sales in the US. In fact, the Gamecube outsold the Xbox in 2003. It came close in 2004 though - PS2 still outsold it by 17%. In 2005, PS2 more than doubled the Xbox sales again.

The Xbox360 only gained marketshare because it had a 1 year headstart and much cheaper than the PS3. The PS3 still outsold it. The Scorpio will have neither the first move advantage nor the price advantage.

Well yes, the XBox being outsold in 2005 makes sense because MS was prepping for the XBox 360. But clearly they had built momentum and it had started to pay dividends by 2004 where it had begun to sell on par with the PS2 and by then even I started noticed kids starting to say "XBox" more than "Playstation" as their defacto gaming terminology.

I think Scorpio will do something similar for MS, it will get them moving in the right direction by getting back 3rd party multiplatform superiority. This is vital to the XBox brand.

In the US, the XBox was becoming the no.1 gaming brand, no question about it (globally is a different story) until MS made missteps with the XBox One launch.

The Xbox sales dropped before the 360 was announced. Keep in mind that the PS2 outsold the 360 in 2005 and 2006. Just looking at the trend it's clear that 2004 was a year where the Xbox overperformed. You're talking about the Xbox momentum being halted by the Xbox One launch but you're forgeting that the only reason the 360 was on top in the US was because of Sony's missteps. Missteps which MS are committing again - a year later and, most likely, more expensive.
