It may have something to do with the country/clime. Spain is a warm country and drinking a lot of water is a must. Melons and watermelons make that a bit less tedious, plus you can put them in the fridge and be a very refreshing way to end your meal without having to resort to ice-cream.
That said, I have to disagree with you. Watermelons have very little taste, but melons do not only have taste, but they taste great
