Well it's good to see this is were people draw the line and not pay to win 
Let's be real if they charged you to just straight up buy the cosmetic items you'd still be pissed off about how expensive it would be. They aren't making extra content for free, it costs them money. On top of that they are attempting to grow the e-Sport scene and the best way to go about that is to throw more money at it.
Anyway if you don't like the system and wished you could have just bought the items you can always try buying them from players and just pay paling them the money
