It must take me forever, because I'm still trying to master Donkey Kong and I've got the arcade machine at my place. The term is so subjective, because a lot people who are considered masters by others aren't satisfied with what they've accomplished and strive for more. For some it's a big deal to complete a title, whether they struggled with it or not and I say congrats to them. I think it's about when you reach the peak point of feeling rewarded and have achieved whatever your highest goal was in that game (here's looking at you Luigi's Coin Challenge in Galaxy). Obviously, that's going to vary greatly from person to person and game to game, not just genre to genre.
