It's definitely meant to be played once, although I believe there's a separate mode where you can interact with all the characters in the school without any of them dying. Kyoko is best girl.

I do think the dvd scene was done well, considering it's just to mess with their heads and question whether or not something like this really happened, while they were in the school and force them to take action.

Well specifically, Makoto saw a scene of his family's living room looking like it was hit by the apocalypse.  I would have preferred seeing police cars in the background with lights flashing as if his family was arrested or murdered.  And then there was Sayaka.  Just seeing her friends dead on stage was a bit of a cop out and was way too unrealistic.  Why not show them fraternizing with a rival pop lead singer that was to be Sayaka's replacement since she was missing from the group and trapped in the school?  Minor things, yes.  But those could have been easily reworked to make the characters more relatable.
