Well with the new x1 controllers, you can pair them up with bluetooth and you don't need an adapter unless you want to have more than one controller. Not that I ever thought MS requiring an adapter was a good idea in the first place since to me, it makes zero sense apart from $$$.
And the issue with third party apps is that they aren't exactly perfect or as stable as official ones would be.
Edit: Also Bluetooth can do wireless audio
