This stems not from pride of their race itself but in accomplishments achieved despite a system designed to hinder it.    When you are part of a race, gender, culture, ethnic group. etc...that is disadvantaged, their is a sense of collective pride when a member achieves a status that is predominantly held by the predominant group.
