The British media has certainly been boasting about beating China in the medal table, and how they were able to get more medals than 2012, but if you compare only the Gold medals, GB is actually down (27 vs 29).
Comparing the top 5 countries performances to 2012, the US received the same amount of Gold's (46), China is way down from 2012 (26 vs 38), Russia is down for obvious reasons (24 vs 19), and Germany increased (17 vs 11).
