Right now the XBO is running at a 1.75M deficit vs. the PS4 in LTD sales in the U.S. Even if it averaged a 50k lead over the PS4 every month from now on, it would take 35 months to close the gap. But there's no reason to think it will maintain any sort of long-term monthly winning streak over the PS4. Look at what it took for the XBO to beat the PS4 in the few occasions it won a month. In the 2014 holiday season, MS issued a "temporary" price cut to $350, giving the XBO a solid price advantage, and this was enough to put the XBO ahead. In April 2015 there were major sales promos for the XBO, which were enough to put the XBO slightly ahead that month. October 2015 was Halo 5 month, but that was still only a narrow victory. And in July the XBO, after already getting some massive price cuts ($70 in total), ostensibly to help clearance out old SKUs to make way for the S model, it was reduced yet another $20. Yet even with the base-level SKUs having a $100 price advantage over the PS4, it was only still yet another slim victory.

The sales data is clear on this. The XBO cannot beat the PS4 at price parity, and even at $50 under parity it has lost more often than won. The XBO S may change this temporarily, as we saw the 360 S provide a significant boost to the 360's sales, but once Sony issues the inevitable counter-attack (a $300 Slim will probably be announced along with the PS4 Neo at the NYC event on Sept. 7), the PS4 is all but guaranteed to regain the top spot, and it will likely keep it for the remainder the generation, a few random months here and there excepted. By generation's end, I expect the PS4 to have a roughly 5 million unit lead over the XBO.

EDIT: And while I was busy writing this (I got sidetracked a bit), it seems we got even more evidence of a PS4 Slim.

5 million lead in the US? I don't think so. Enough so, I'm willing to bet on it...
