heavily depends on the type of game and situation
I think an atmospheric horror game can work great in both perspectives, maybe I prefer first person for the scares. I think an action game can be effective in both ways, hence why many let you change perspective with a push of the button.
An adventure platformer, third person.
A story based adventure game like Bioshock I prefer in first person.
the thing is it will totally vary based upon what you're doing in the game. if its a game in which you're in a big space and need to see your surrounding and multi task then third person will obviously be preferable. If its a story based or atmospheric game where you're supposed to truly 'experience' things, then first person is the obvious go-to
