Actually some countries rank the teams by total medals. I guess it just depends on what makes your country look better.

America loves to do this, but there is only 1 way to rank it and that's by gold medals. If its a tie it goes to silver. That's how the winner is decided in most if not all major sporting events.

Every American media outlet I've seen is doing it by gold if tied by silver, if still tied by bronze. Did they used to do it differently? I can't recall how it was done in previous Olympics.

I watched Walsh/Ross vs Agatha/Barbara beach volleyball last night. The Brazilians played great, including some amazing saves that looked near impossible, and Walsh/Ross played awful. They made so many errors and bad decisions; Walsh couldn't dig if you gave her a shovel last night. They had enough talent to stay in it, but they needed their 'A' game against opponents like Agatha/Barbara and they just didn't have it. I hope they can at least take Bronze in the third place match, but after that performance I'm not confident.
