I don't think that's true. 

Silver and bronze still mean something, and at least the athlete got something for all their hard work rather than nothing. And I think it's still very special to be ranked #2 or #3 in the entire world for your sport. 

And it's not like the whole world knows who you are after you win gold. Most people only know the big stars - Bolt, Phelps, Simone Biles, Katie ledeky etc. People forget all about everyone else right after the Olympics are over.
