It is ofcourse good news they got the city but it is not really an important big city their were estimated 20.000 residents with 500 isis troops and the city was surrounded for alteast two months before they captured it. Hundreds of those 500 isis troops escaped recently with using human shields.


When ISIS is still in control of 1-2 million people 20.000 doesn't sound a lot especially from now on it only gets harder. It is kind of troublesome that it all takes so long.

Well IS is estimated to have lost over 1000 in the battle.  As for importance, it's not the numbers it's the location.  Manbij being contested prevented the Kurds and Syrians from putting full pressure on IS's territory connecting it to Turkey, which has allowed IS to keep its smuggling route open to that region.  With Manbij fallen, the closing of that route is imminent it would seem.  Which will further reduce their financial ability to make war.  Also, the more territory lost, the more the fear of ISIL continues to lessen.  Also, if the route to Turkey is closed, the ability to smuggle IS combatants into Europe will be greatly hampered.  So Manbij is an important victory.

Of course, don't expect this positivity in the media to last.  The moment a single airstrike goes awry or a new attack - no matter how rudimentary - happens, the fear mongering will return in full force along with sensationalized hate-mongering of whatever country launches said airstrikes.  Nevermind the consistent victories and momentum of the past several months and the thousands of flawless airstrikes that have been crucial to these victories.


That is the thing Turkey doesn't want the kurdish pushing harder.  Turkey agreed that the Kurdish/US/YPG etc may go and conquer Manbij but today already said that Kurdish troops have to withdraw from Manbij. I expect Turkey to demand it for YPG/US troops aswell or atleast the majority of the troops. 

To be fair about the media they make manbij look like a big deal but when you hear years ago that ISIS/ISIL will be finished soon....Well it takes a long time and ISIS is not only in Syria and Iraq. The 40% conquered land is basically 36% sand of course that is good but does not mean that much.

Especially when a few years ago their was no ISIL in Libya or Egypt but since then they got a small territory close to Israel in Egypt and a part of the north and important harbours of Libya. Also the number of jihad troups pledging an alliance has growing steadily around the world.
