It has nothing to do with the gaming community and everything to do with a lot of people being pricks who can say whatever they want with no consequences.

The anonymity of the Internet certainly is an aggravating factor. But I do think parochialism and brand loyalty is a bigger problem in the community of video game fans than, say, movie or music fans.

I don't think you've spent enough time at pop forums. They can be just as toxic with person defending actors and pop stars more than they would their own child by attacking other users or movies/pop stars. Death threats, wishing someone will get cancer, wisher their children will get cancer, etc.

Internet will be internet.
