With full backwards and almost full forward compatability (high and low resolution on the same disk) they would not be taking away anything from the Wii owners and by drawing more game development would actually be benefiting them. The trade in ($100 if bought in the last year) would be only for those that wanted to upgrade including all those that had clamored for HD.
Some new IPs might not be able or willing to support forward compatibility but access to the by then 50-100M installed base would be a very powerful incentive especially if Nintendo offered tools to make the translation easier.
