There are thousands of Americans on river cruises up the Rhine. Few of them speak Dutch, Flemish, French, German, Luxembourgish, ...

They know English. If you don't even know English when traveling to foreign contries you are an idiot and basically beg for bad things and misunderstandings to happen to you.

You don't even have to speak it. Just a few phrases you can point at on a piece of paper. If you go unprepared into a foreign country you deserve everything that happens to you.
