It depends how it's done. Mass Effect added an annoying overlay on top of the whole screen. If used correctly to make darker areas look a bit more grainy then it can be quite tasteful.
Good use of bloom, natural lens flare and atmosphere heightening grain.
Unfortunaltely the same game also felt this was good use
Funny how it says HD... Nonsense crack in the lens, blocky distortion, terrible CA, overdone grain.
Actually the grain is the most believable as that's what I get with my digital HD camera in dark conditions, however it can also automatically drop all the way down to 12fps to get more light per image, they forgot to do that lol. Digital noise still looks different.
