my thoughts exactly... what were they thinking when they gave Olympics to Rio? I mean even if we ignore political and economic problems, the extreme amount of garbage that pollutes sea water is a serious issue that cannot be fixed in the short termhttp://www.cbsnews.com/news/experts-warns-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-olympic-athletes-of-viruses-in-water-days-ahead-of-games/ I really hope that everything goes well, as the country and its people suffered economically for this, at least make it worth it...

C'mon, Thames River water was fine for the Olympics, it's not really any better than Guanabara. Millions of people get into the water there every year and nobody died because of that.

Garbage can harm the sailing boats. While people may not have died, and the water is safe is most popular beaches, there are reports of people getting sick after bathing in certain parts of the Bay.

Rio´s biologists and doctors themselves were the first to warn about the quality of the water, not foreigners. The city has also an institute that always monitor the quality of water. This is their last report: http://www.inea.rj.gov.br/cs/groups/public/documents/document/zwff/mda5/~edisp/inea_009193.pdf
