Sopranos did kick ass, but staying with the genre (more or less), Breaking Bad is where it's at.
Breaking Bad is so brilliant, it basically put me off of watching other series. There's no point anymore, I've now seen the peak and it isn't getting better anymore. 
Straying from the genre though, my favorites in random order would be, besides Breaking Bad obviously, Game of Thrones, Vikings, Lost, Friends, Star Trek The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica (the reboot), South Park, Band of Brothers (though this is only a mini-series, 10 episodes), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yeah I liked that, come at me!), That '70s Show, Rome and Spartacus.
