Growing up in the UK, we often thought anybody still living at home with their family beyond 21-23 was a "failure".

However, my generation was the one that turned 18 around the time of the GFC in 2008. I managed to move out a year after with Uni, and was lucky enough to not have to go back home after. For most of my friends, however, they are still stuck at home, about to turn 25.

Looking at their financial situation and the state of the British economy, I very much doubt many of them will be properly financially independent until possibly their 30s. Starting a family before mid-30s? Forget about it.

My parents both had zero qualifications when they left home at 18. By the time they were my age (24), they had two children, two properties, and a car. They were not an exception, they were the norm.

It's sad how much quality of life has deteriorated for most in my generation. Again, I got lucky, and was able to leave the country for work, but it seems very few out there get the same opportunities anymore.
