source: Big plans for Neo-Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan’s capital and home to more than 13 million people, held a gubernatorial election Sunday, and it’s being reported the winner is Yuriko Koike, making her the first female governor in the city’s history.

This is notable for otaku, in part, because Koike campaigned on transforming Tokyo into “anime land.”

Koike made the anime land comment while campaigning last month in Akihabara, Tokyo’s otaku mecca, where she also mentioned that last year, she cosplayed as classic magical girl Sally the Witch for Halloween and is considering Princess Knight for this year.

She also mentioned that her hometown is Tokyo’s Toshima ward, the home of Tokiwa-so, the legendary apartment that housed artists like Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori and Fujiko Fujio.

Now that Koike has successfully become governor, let’s see if Anime Land Tokyo becomes a reality.
