I actually agree here. I've been kind of bummed by this generations lack of GREAT first party as of yet. 3rd party games have been the way to go for a while now.

I look at the different games I have in my PS3 collection, and it does seem that this current gen (PS4/XBO) has a lack of variety, but I think it just goes to show the quick death of AA games, which used to fill in many slots. So for me 1st party from Sony has been ok, but 3rd party has been very safe :(

I kind of think "indie" games are filling that "AA" gap. Well, indie games and Nintendo. Look at titles like Rocket League, Severed, Freedom Planet, Splatoon, A Link Between Worlds, etc. These are titles with relatively modest budgets that punch well above their weight. With Microsoft and Sony dropping the ball vis-a-vis their homegrown titles and third-party giants playing it safe, I've found myself looking more and more to small studios and Nintendo-affiliated studios to deliver the goods.
