Why are handhelds often seen as inferior or not as important as home consoles?

I don't live in Japan, basically.

If I'm at home, I want the superior experience. If I'm not at home then I'm almost certainly not playing a video-game. I tried it a few times but it's just not for me. If I have to wait somewhere then I'd rather take my Kindle.
