Merging console and handheld is a good business decision. The hardware idea is nice. I'm sure they'll sell at a profit out of the gate.

But I have to wonder how this will impact actual games and third parties. Won't this hand-tie them when making games? Why cartridge based? I mean, really, why? Because it keeps hardware costs lower without any internal storage? Won't that ultimately make the cartridges more expensive? And instead of downloading multiple games to the device, you have to swap cartridges. Are we still living in the 90's?

This is a definite risk by Nintendo. But they've never really cared about third party support anyway. We'll see how it all plays out....

Going download only is certainly a bigger risk. Discs are completely out of the question for a handheld device and so the only physical medium viable is cartridges, which are superior in many ways anyway. There will definitely be potential to go fully digital but we don't have enough details yet regarding internal storage space/ external card compatibility etc.
