The only thing that really changed with me. Is the amount of time I put into games. Because I had lots of time as a kid. But the rest of the stuff hasn't. I never got every single major game, for a system. Nor did I want every console. I just picked whatever I liked. And that was it. I'd skip a lot of big games all the time. I never got Super Metroid, when I had my SNES. As an example.
