Hard on games? Hell no they aren't.

A 5.0 should be average. When was the last time a media outlet held to that standard? Today a 7.5 is average.

Which actually makes sense if you think about it. 70% is a "C" grade. I don't mind the numbers (I would eliminate them if possible but that will never happen), just how they're used. Waaaaay too many "B"s getting thrown around at mediocre games and way too many games hitting A-/B+ levels with serious bugs inherent in the gameplay.

The aphanumberic grading scale is flawed because the coursework is designed so that 50% of the population should score 75%, not 50%.

What has happened to our media industry is publisher advertising. Long time back a 50 was OK but as publishers expressed more interest in funding via advertising, those outlets began slightly raising their scores in their favor. Other media outlets had no choice but to follow pace for fear of appearing too tough on reviews and losing publisher ad support.

It's poliferated to the point now it would be impossible to reverse without its own disruption.

I completely agree but there are ways to make the alphanumeric system work. Since we can't get rid of it, if reviewers actually stuck to the idea that 70%=completely average, we would at least have consistency. The problem I see is that many of them consider 75-80% average and that leaves far too little room to properly distinguish the good from the great from the revolutionary.
