How Ubisoft deceived millions of people (Downgrades)

I don't have a Uplay account and don't think I've purchased a Ubisoft game in year but this is all mainly due to lack of interest in what they offer, none of them appeal to me.

Yet what confuses me from watching that video is how they purposely added certain stuff to the games (like areas to explore) and went out of their way to block it off instead of just leaving it there just redundent. Seems odd way of doing things.
