I think it depends. Do you remember a time people outside the gaming industry talking about GTA V in ways that we've heard about Pokemon or even Mario? As Soundwave said, cultural phenomenons are things that transcend beyond their traditional bounds within their subjects. I've made a recent example for Mario and Pokemon Go is becoming one itself. So what has GTA V done to go beyond the gaming industry? Just an honest question. i guess you could say it still challenged public disdain for what should be made in video games due to its controversial nature but is that enough? |
People need to spend more money with GTA than Pokemon, they need to purchase a console and the game, while Pokemon Go is a free game and 99.9% of the people already have a Phone to play it. Pokemon also have dozens of Movies and a Anime series with 900-950 Episodes (with even more episodes than One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto) GTA is a gaming franchise and they never tryed to be anything more than this, they don't even need because they are the biggest third party Ip of the gaming industry.
And I don't understand this thing "As Soundwave said, cultural phenomenons are things that transcend beyond their traditional bounds within their subjects. "
How do you know that it has "transcended beyond their traditional bounds within their subjects " the Pokemon games already have more than a Dozen of millions of people per game, GTA also have multiple dozens of players, only because now we see that people are playing this means that the game "transcended" ? So if more people play GTA than Pokemon, and we don't see it, this means that GTA isn't a cultural phenomenon ? We don't have how to know if the ones playing Pokemon Go were not gamers before the game came out. Pokemon Go is a Mobile game on a Market that is very big and have a very successful series.
Pokemon's subjects are: Gaming, Anime, Movies, Merchandise (toys etc).
GTA's subjects are: Gaming.
Which one do you think that, with a free to play mobile game, would have bigger worldwide appeal for casual mobile games (and also fans) ?
