I don't pirate games, but I will say this. If they can't make money or get anything from it. At least their art is enjoyed and recognised. That is the key aspect of all forms of art. rather it's paintings, film, stories, music, or games.
It's ALWAYS feels better for someone to notice and enjoy your work than it is to get paid for it. I'd wager most would give their work out for free if it wasn't their sole source of income to live. I know I would.
