Perhaps I just took claims like that for granted but perhaps it is strong but not the strongest (hemp).  It might be the easiest to mass produce.  I dwelled deeper into the subject (one google search) and spider silk started appearing on some links but the top link says Sorry Spiders; Sea Snails make the strongest material on earth.  However, none of that can be easily mass reproduced yet and I'm pretty sure hemp grows better (faster and more dense) than a Banana plant.  So the most cost effective way to make strong natural rope would be the hemp plant.  I'll edit strongest to one of the strongest in my original post.
