It's generally difficult to keep track of replies and for some, they don't find it worth it to click on something where they might feel that because there are so many replies, it's difficult to add something to the thread.
In addition to that, I personally, am more likely to reply to a new thread because it's new. I know you can update mega threads via title but it just isn't the same as a "new thread". I guess, they generally lack focus and I can't usually continue in a thread if it isn't focused. It's too much for my small mind to process. 
Lastly, personally, I like to have closure with everything I do. I want there to be a beginning and an end so that I can clear my cache at the end and focus on newer things. I feel that megathreads are much different and have a different style than regular threads and they require various tastes. I might be looking too deep into it but that's why I generally avoid them.
