This information was explained a bunch during E3 including interviews for Eurogamer and a few other sites on the UHD player.  People have even commented in post on this site on the UHD player in the X1 S.  Not sure why this is news to some of you unless you do not follow X1 news.

They announce the thing on a big stage and can't put in "It has a 4k bluray drive" in it. Literally a couple of seconds to state it. When you're revealing a piece of hardware say what it can do when you have the most exposure.

"It's 40 % smaller, it has a 4k blurary drive and it upscales games to 4k." There I just summed up the advantages of the slim over the XBO in a sentence, yet two of those 3 things weren't mentioned when they showed it on their stage at e3.
