People purchase consoles because of their games and Exclusives, something that Microsoft will no longer have. And there is no way that Microsoft can compete against PC gaming with the Xbox One, because PC gaming will be cheaper and will play  the same and even more games than the Xbox One. The way to compete is with exclusives, and with we have more than 1 Console company selling their games for the PC it will be the end of the console market. (Something that Microsoft want since they can't compete there.)

And I don't think that opening online cross-play will affect the sales but it will of course benefit Microsoft more than Sony.

Wii U has a larger library of quality exclusives than either other console and free online play yet sold by far the worst. Exclusives are nice, but their importance to the mass market is largely overstated here. Also, Xbox still has exclusives, and Microsoft isn't trying to compete against the PC with the Xbox One. That's like saying Nintendo is trying to compete against the WiiU with the 3DS. They have the same ecosystem and play the same types of games, usually from the same IP's. Gaming on Windows is about expanding the reach for MS. If Xbone loses to PC gamers, why does MS care? Those PC gamers can log onto the Windows Store and pay MS monies for games there.

Exactly what is this big benefit MS gets from opening online play across all platforms that Sony does not? Are people suddenly going to start buying up Xbones instead of PS4's? I don't see why. PS4 already has the "it" factor.

What you mean with "Wii U has a larger library of quality exclusives than either other console and free online play yet sold by far the worst."? Quality is something from person to person but I can bet that  only releasing a game every 4-5 months hurted Wii U's sales and also every single Multiplataform game skipping the Wii U also helped a lot in its failure.

Wii U is a home console and 3DS a handheld console.  completely different markets and I don't remember the last time Handhelds received games of the size of Console or PC games.

Xbox already is very niche out-side the USA and now without Exclusives Microsoft will not be able to get any ground out-side of the USA. Of course people on the USA will continue to purchase the Xbox One regardless of that (but in a less quantity) since Microsoft have a strong fanbase there. A console that only is popular in 2 countries will have a hard time getting the Developer's atention, more exclusives would come for the PS4.
