Yes and no....Vaan is the main character that the player follows in terms of Point of View.
Ashe is the main protagonist of the game's story.
Just like how Tidus is the main character that the players follow per Point of View while Yuna is the main protagonist of the story.

If you dont believe me - here, read this
The protagonist is the person who opposes and/or is opposed by the antagonist. Between them and their conflicting goals, they create the obstacles that propel the story forward. In short, the protagonist is the catalytic force at the story’s center. Obviously, the protagonist is a very dynamic fellow. After all, he’s the one who’s creating this entire story. As such, he will almost always be the person whom the story is about. He will be the one nearest the audience, perhaps even the one directly telling them his story. All that personal forcefulness doesn’t mean he must be the story’s main character. Sometimes the main character–that person who is nearest the audience–won’t, in fact, be the story’s main catalyst. Although he will almost certainly be active within the plot, he may not be the one driving it. Rather, he may be simply observing the protagonist in action while the main character himself is caught up in the protagonist’s whirlpool. |
We gotta ask the topic creator whether he means protagonist or main character. He says one in the title and the other in the post.
Also, it's not like Vaan was only there for narration purposes - from my perspectivr he's the one who defeated all the enemies.
One question though - who do you think is the protagonisy in the Lord of the Rings?
