I am atheist, and I have asked this question to myself multiple times since I was a teen, my idealistic side says that the world would be a better place, less discrimination and less war, but I am afraid that if religion were to disappear it'd probably would be replaced by something worse. So at the end of the day, I think religion is a necessary evil, fortunately, more and more religious people are becoming tolerant towards gays and other things, something that would have bee unthinkable in the past.
