I don't think it necesarily takes fanaticism for it to turn bad. I mean, look at all the paedophile cover ups done by the catholic church, those people involved in that surely weren't fanatical...

But that said I'd agree that being spiritual and having beliefs isn't really a problem. It's organised religion that's the problem...

well yeah  people with power can do a lot of bad things, but again, that's not a religion thing, it's a human thing.
