I woudn't mind a more functional desktop. Doesn't need fancy speech features, just a package manager like GNOME Software and Debian repositories out of the box would make it a much more functional OS.

Yeah something like that could be warrented and work quite well. The OS doesn't need to do documents and have cortana or anything tile like, the OS is from Steam, one that is meant for gaming and gaming alone. Those that want it to be exactly like Windows are looking at the wrong OS. I've always wanted an OS that just has a focus on gaming on PC and Steam OS is pretty much that option, for years I've never wanted all the crap that is always tacked onto MS OS (some always say to remove it but always forget the main point I've tried relaying) and just wanted it strictly to adhere to gaming and that's it, but since MS never bothered to create an OS just for gaming and nothing else, that then leaves Steam OS as the one option.

The focus of SteamOS should always be on games, but they could certainly improve some things for people who might want to use it as a general OS. Just allowing Debian repo's, GNOME Software would go a long way.

I've now replaced SteamOS for Ubuntu MATE and added the Steam client. SteamOS' Java support isn't very good so I had quite a bit of problems running Minecraft, while Ubuntu Mate has the most recent OpenJDK Java implementation.

I really hope Valve just adds support for a few more recent standards and easier app installation for those who want that functionality. It would make SteamOS a real good option for gaming minded people who wouldn't mind editing a document and playing some Minecraft on the normal desktop when needed.
