These mid gen consoles coupled with the pairing of VAR never were supposed to shorten this generation, they were meant to help extend and maintain hardware sales, in much the same way that PS Move and Kinect did - the difference here is that VR seems much more substantial than anything in the past and this is the first time we've had noticeable bumps in power under the same branding.
And yes. Sony has played this game of Chess impeccably this time around. They're orchestrating everything well.
