I don't know where this idea that dialogue options should lead to story changes is coming from. It appears to be writing itself. The 'norm' is that they don't but for some reason it's slowly becoming a negative and for me that's going to be detrimental to narratives in the future. I've even seen people suggesting TLOU should have had them and my only conclusion is people are stupid. |
For me it's fine that dialogue choices don't effect the main story but I absolutely love the small changes and different courses of action you're able to make in smaller side quests.
An example is the Fallout 3 side quest "The Replicated Man" where you track down "Harkness" who is an escaped and self aware android.
Depending on your dialogue options and courses of action you can either:
1. Lie to the owner who wants to reset Harkness and tell him that the android is dead (reward: 50 caps + good karma)
2. Convince Harkness that he's an android but promise (you can break that promise) to keep his location a secret (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma)
3. Talk Harkness out of his desire to kill his owner (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma)
4. Offer to kill the owner yourself (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma)
5. Convince Harkness to fight for his memory which makes him kill his owner (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma)
6. Tell Harkness that the choice is his own which will make him stay in Rivet City (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma)
7. Convince Harkness to turn himself in to his owner (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 evil karma)
8. Report Harkness' name and location to his owner who will then reset Harkness to factory defaults and leave Rivet City with Harkness in tow (reward: wired reflexes perk + 200 evil karma)
9. Report Harkness' name and location to his owner but kill the owner after the resetting - unfortunately Harkness can't get his memory and self-awareness back and will just stand still asking for parameters with a dead robotic look on his face for the rest of his "life" (reward: wired reflexes perk + 200 evil karma)
10. Offer to kill the owner yourself but instead of doing so you reveal Harkness' name and locations to the owner - you may then either kill the owner or allow him to wipe Harkness' memory and take him away (reward: A3-21 plasma rifle + 200 good karma + wired reflexes perk + 200 evil karma)
I'd be extremely glad if Horizon is going to have something like that.
