That's not exactly true, there are lots, lots of games out there you would want to buy you just don't know, or that people were once excited about and aren't anymore, which they would buy before but won't now, at least not at launch.
The key is getting people to want what you have and making them be able to get it while they still want it, as I said, pre-orders are quite a help on that, but I still believe letting to show your game when it's about to come (less than one year) would make more people buy them, at least at launch, lasting appeal is another story.

fair enough, but its not like the release date changes. GOW4 for example not coming till next year. Whether there was a e3 trailer this year or not it still isnt changing the fact that we wont get it till next year. If there was no trailer you would've been more excited? less? same?

I think lasting appeal goes hand in hand with overall sales.
