I dont agree that a strong family focus is really a big reason, it had a bunch of T/M rated games in its first year that kinda negates that.
All Nintendo handhelds had competition, just because Nintendo completely dominated doesnt mean they didnt exist. Atari Lynx (1989), NEC TurboExpress (1990), Sega Game Gear (1991), Sega Nomad (1995), Neo Geo Pocket (1996), Tiger Game.com (1997), WonderSwan (1999), SwanCrystal (2002), Nokia N-Gage (2003), Tapwave Zodiac (2004), Gizmondo (2005).
